According to local news reports, the death of a 25-year-old male bicyclist in September of 2018 took the death toll of Colorado Springs traffic fatalities to 35 so far in the year. In 2017, the total was 27. According to a January 28, 2018 article in The Gazette, more than a quarter of the record number of people killed on Colorado Springs' roads in 2017 were cyclists or pedestrians, raising concerns about the safety of those who walk or bike on city streets. The increase in traffic fatalities where speed, drugs, or alcohol are not a factor has Colorado Springs law enforcement concerned that too many people are being injured or killed on local roadways because of a lack of attention to their surroundings and a decline in driver courtesy.
Colorado Springs Police Sgt. Jim Stinson -- who oversees the Police Department’s Major Accident Unit -- stated, "Politeness and consideration seem to be a thing of the past. You don't see as often people allowing other people to merge, and when that does happen, you don't see somebody waving, 'Thanks.'" Stinson also pointed out in an email to The Gazette that he believes it is time for drivers to take responsibility for their bad driving habits, stating that “dying in a crash is just as tragic as being murdered,” and expressed hope that drivers would exercise more caution and drive with more consideration of others on the road. People need to be held accountable, it’s that simple.
