City streets and busy roadways are dangerous places, and when you’re traveling on foot, the danger of being hurt or killed by a motor vehicle is very real. Pedestrians are the most vulnerable roadway users, being difficult to see in many traffic situations and facing high odds of being seriously injured or killed if hit by a moving vehicle. In 2023, Denver, and Colorado as a whole, reached record highs with 131 pedestrian fatalities during the year. Pedestrians between the ages of 15 and 24 had the highest involvement in crashes, with Federal Boulevard and Colfax Boulevard among the top five high crash corridors, and Colorado Boulevard among the top 10 crash corridors in Denver.
The majority (63%) of accidents involving pedestrians occurred at intersections. In a crash involving a pedestrian, the most common vehicle path is traveling straight; the second most common path is making a left turn. One-third of pedestrian accidents occurred at night. Pedestrians were impaired by alcohol or drugs in only eight percent of crashes involving pedestrians. In addition to pedestrian accidents involving a pedestrian crossing the road, other pedestrian crashes involved roadside workers or emergency responders who were injured or killed while working on freeways at crash scenes. These emergency responders, construction workers, and police officers are extremely vulnerable to being struck by a fast-moving motor vehicle traveling on the freeway. With all these statistics and risks to pedestrians, it's easy to see why you would need an experienced team of Denver pedestrian accident attorneys on your side!
